Rethinking Lingerie – Sew My Style August 2019

August was lingerie month for Sew My Style. I was pretty excited but also nervous about sewing lingerie. I started out with great plans to make multiple items, but ultimately I did not make anything. Part of this was due to a lot of life changes, but part of it was due to my struggle with deciding what to make.

When I think of lingerie I envision very dainty undergarments that are adorned with lace and worn on special occasions. But honestly, none of that resonates with me. I’m not knocking anything that people made or choose to wear, it’s just that I think lingerie is a very personal category. My idea of lingerie may be completely different from the next person’s, and I love that! One of the things I enjoy about sewing is that it allows each of us to create the garments that are unique to our fit and desires.

Every person should be able to wear things that make them feel exactly how they want to feel. For me, I feel best in comfortable garments. I prefer comfort over silhouette most of the time. My style continues to evolve, but comfort is always near the top of the list for me.

So what does that mean for lingerie? I am planning to make a sleek lounge/lingerie set for myself. I have some beautiful silk that I purchased last year from The Sewing Studio and it’s been patiently sitting in my stash waiting for the perfect project. I am going to make some shorts using the Seamwork Miller pattern. I might still make a sports bra or wireless bra because that combination sounds incredibly comfortable to me. I might even make a dressing robe. I will sketch it out to see exactly what makes sense for me.

How have you found comfort and delight in creating cute and comfortable lingerie during your sewing journey?
