Hey y’all! I’m back with an extra special post for the Sew Family Jammies Blog Tour. Today I’ll be talking about the pajamas I made for my dad. Admittedly, I had grand plans of making pajamas for several members of my family. I only got to finish one item, but I’m completely okay with that.

Let me start off by saying this is the first time I’ve made a garment specifically for someone else. That alone made this project both terrifying and exciting at the same time. I decided to make something for my dad because I’d promised him a handmade garment a while back, and I thought this would be the perfect opportunity to make good on that promise.

My dad tends to be cold pretty much throughout winter. He ends up layering clothing to keep warm, even when he sleeps. I decided to add another cozy layer to his winter wardrobe. I made the Finlayson Sweater from Thread Theory. I wanted to make pajamas that kept him warm and doubled as a casual layer for the rest of the day. I made the Finlayson in a Medium and I used this incredibly soft bamboo/cotton sweat shirting I picked up last year from Imagine Gnats. This fabric was the best choice for ultimate coziness and the color really looks great on him. I’d love to try a French terry or sweater knit for the next version just to see how it drapes.

This pattern was easy to make and the instructions were clear. I would definitely make it again, and might possibly go up one size to allow for additional layers underneath. My dad’s favorite feature of the Finlayson is the collar detail. It adds some style and warmth to the garment. This sweater was definitely a success and I think my dad might trust me to make him more garments in the future. I’d like to try some pajama pants next year to make an entire lounge set. Who knows, I might even make some pajamas for the whole family. Until then, I will hand out vouchers to my family that are good for one handmade item in 2020.
